CHAPTER 12

The following day, I sped through Darcies Doughnuts then returned to the familiar parking lot. As I entered the Double J ranch I figured Daisy and I were on each other’s Christmas card list after all these visits.

Daisy greeted me with a small wave. “Good morning, Ms. O’Neil. Is Mrs. Love expecting you?”

“Yes, sort of.” I wandered over with my bag of goodies. “But look at what I brought. Apple Spice doughnut holes.” I held the bag in a tempting way.

“Oh!” Her eyes widened. “And I’m on a diet.”

“A diet! Well, I tell you what. These are only the holes. Practically no calories at all.”

She smirked.

“Do you want me to get rid of them?” I’d been on the other side of the calorie counting. I really didn’t want to tempt her.

“Pass them over. I have a cheat day coming.” I gave her the bag and she peeked inside. “Nice! Now tell me, does our darling ranch have any bites?”

The interested party from the zoom call was not getting back to me as quickly as I wanted. However, the second buyer was still on the hook, and requesting those maze pictures. Hopefully this would be the ticket.

I gave her a secretive raise of my eyebrows. “Can’t say for sure. However, while I’m waiting for something official, I hoped to get some photos of the statues in the maze. Mrs. Love invited me to come today.”

“Oh, yes! It is back open now. Give me one minute and I’ll get Kyle to come guide you through.”

I thanked her and waited. She got on her phone and made a call, I presumed to Kyle. When she hung up, she popped a pastry bit into her mouth, and made a soft sound of appreciation. I noticed she tucked them away in a drawer in her desk. Obviously, she didn’t want to share.

It didn’t take long for the young man to come through the entrance. He took off a battered leather cowboy hat and nodded in my direction. With a huge smile, he waved for me to follow him back outside.

Once out in the courtyard, the hat went firmly back in place on his head. “How are you, Ms. O’Neil?” he asked. His soft voice was slightly clipped, and I half expected to see a toothpick clenched between his teeth.

“Please. Just Stella is fine. I’m doing okay. It has been a stressful, long week though. I bet even more for you.”

“You could say that. Things are still weird around here. The sale worried a lot of people as it was. And then Owen….” Kyle shook his head and sighed. “He was a good guy.”

“It’s just so sad. Did you know him long?”

“A few years now. He was an incredible worker, and turned into a good friend of mine.”

I felt terrible. “I’m sorry for your loss. I have heard nothing but good things about him.”

“I hope they figure out what happened. It isn’t right. And the tourism is definitely down a lot. People are nervous, you know?”

I agreed with that.
